Pathology

Tumors and cysts of the mouth, jaws and surrounding structures of the face may possibly cause pain, numbness, swelling, asymmetries, shifting of teeth and malocclusion. We can help manage or provide definitive treatment for many conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.

What is a biopsy?

A biopsy is the removal of a small portion of tissue from your soft issues, teeth, or jaw. Generally, a biopsy is performed to obtain a histologic diagnosis. Because certain oral diseases result in lumps and cysts inside of the mouth, it is important to examine any that appear to ensure your oral and general health.

How is a biopsy done?

A biopsy is done after we provide you with the proper anesthesia and sedation. It involves the surgical removal of the abnormal tissue. We use great care when performing a biopsy at Plattsburgh Dental Plaza. We also provide instructions to guide you through the healing process. The removed tissue is sent to a pathologist for examination.

Based on the diagnosis, further treatment may or may not be necessary.
